Tough As Nails Mountain Run Results May 8, 2010
Prescott Park , Roxy Ann Peak
Cool cloudy spring weather greeted 137 runners as they toed the gypsum line on the side of Roxy Ann Peak for the start of the annual Tough As Nails Runs on Saturday morning. At the starter's signal, the throng surged up the hill on the loop road, anticipating the grueling granite grind. As the dust cleared, the trailing runners disappeared around the first bend, only to emerge later that morning, grinning gleefully to finish this most arduous of mountain runs. Yes, once again, Southern Oregon 's toughest runners were out to tackle the run that puts flat and fast into another dimension entirely. After circling the loop around the butte, the first 5K runners raced through the finish chute, led by Robert Julian, 17:14 and Merry Ray, 20:07. Completing the 10 mile course, which winds serpent-like down and up and over and around the venerable peak on the single-track and loop roads is considerably more taxing. Yet Leland Fulton charged hard through the finish, leading the men in 1:02:34, while Bree Nelson led all women in 1:13:51. Again, a big thanks to all volunteers: Ladd Zastoupil, Joe Griffin, Felicia Hazel, Chuck Whitely, Steve Buxton, and Connie Gillette.
Respectfully, Clayton ‘Mountain Man’ Gillette
